About this course
This ethnic studies course is an exploration of contemporary issues in Native America. Native American perspectives about economic, political, legal, religious/spiritual, social, and cultural changes impacting tribal cultures in the 20th and 21st centuries are explored, including an examination of Native responses and resistance to the effects of ethnocentrism and colonialism. Students will analyze issues regarding identity, the role of the federal government, economic development, health, education, cultural loss and preservation, reservation vs. urban communities, self-determination and tribal sovereignty, the persistence of treaty rights, and contemporary efforts toward decolonization.
